After the Mod was stopped, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remake was bombarded with bad reviews
As players prepare for the release of H2M, a highly anticipated Modern Warfare Remastered MOD aimed at remastering 2009's Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare Remastered has flooded in with players in preparation for the August 16th release of the MOD. Considering that new Call of Duty games are released every year, Modern Warfare Remastered has been in a state of relative dormancy for players over the past few years. While the reason for the surge in player numbers is believed to be the H2M MOD, it also benefits from a 50% discount on Steam.
Unfortunately, just a day before H2M's upcoming public release, Activision issued a cease and desist order to Modern Warfare Remastered mods. Due to the huge popularity of mods, Call of Duty players were not too happy about the sudden closure and chose to bombard Modern Warfare Remastered with negative reviews on Steam. Almost simultaneously, the 2016 shooter received a large number of negative reviews, causing the game's ratings to drop dramatically.
While the overall rating has now been reduced to medium, Modern Warfare Remake's recent review tags have plummeted to overwhelmingly negative. Typically, the initial reviews for Modern Warfare Remake are positive, with the shooter scoring a whopping 83 on Metacritic. However, the shutdown of H2M caused players to boycott the game and leave plenty of negative reviews to express their dissatisfaction with Activision's handling.
Many negative reviews have cited Activision's reluctance to develop an official remake of the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer game, which is why they are looking forward to the release of H2M. While the studio released a remake of the game's campaign in 2020, Activision confirmed that there are no plans to develop a multiplayer mode for the Modern Warfare 2 remake.
Steam user chattsveryown, one of many users who refunded Modern Warfare Remastered after leaving a negative review, said it was "stupid" for Activision to allow thousands of users to buy the remake and then issue a cease and desist order to the mod creator after the game was no longer for sale. Another negative review came from user Sad. Sponge, who said Activision clearly only cares about money, not players. Although H2M requires players to have an official copy of Modern Warfare Remastered, Activision is unlikely to reverse its decision and allow the mod to be released, despite massive protests in the community.
